What is Chabad?

Chabad of Concord is your local center of Chabad-Lubavitch, the most dynamic and fastest-growing Jewish movement in the world today. But what is Chabad, and where does it come from?

The Name

"Chabad" is a Hebrew acronym for three intellectual faculties: Chochmah (wisdom), Binah (understanding), and Da'at (knowledge). Chabad philosophy teaches that Judaism is not only something we do - it is something we understand, bringing the mind and the heart together in the service of G‑d.

"Lubavitch" is the name of the small town in White Russia where the movement was centered for more than a century. Fittingly, the word means "city of brotherly love," because ahavat Yisrael - love for every Jew - is at the heart of everything Chabad does.

The Movement

Founded over 250 years ago by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the Chabad movement spread from a small village to every corner of the globe. In our generation, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, sent thousands of emissary families - rabbis and their wives - to establish Chabad Houses wherever Jews live: big cities, small towns, college campuses, and everywhere in between.

Today, more than 6,000 emissary families direct over 3,500 Chabad institutions around the world, all sharing one message: every Jew matters, every mitzvah counts, and every Jewish soul deserves a warm place to call home.

Chabad Here at Home

We opened the doors of Chabad of Concord in 2019 with that same vision: a Jewish home for every Jew in the Concord area, with no membership requirements, no labels, and no prerequisites. Whatever brings you in, you belong here.
