Bar Mitzvah at Chabad of Concord

A Bar Mitzvah is a big moment. We want the preparation to be meaningful too.

Every boy comes with a different background. Some already read Hebrew comfortably. Some are just getting started. That’s okay.

We start where your son is and build from there.

What does becoming Bar Mitzvah mean?

A Jewish boy becomes Bar Mitzvah when he turns thirteen according to the Jewish calendar.

From that day on, he is responsible for his own mitzvahs and takes his place as a Jewish adult. He can be counted in a minyan, receive an aliyah to the Torah, and begin taking on mitzvahs such as putting on tefillin on weekday mornings.

The celebration marks the moment.

But Bar Mitzvah isn’t a graduation from Judaism. It’s the beginning of a new stage.

What the Year Looks Like

We strongly recommend starting Bar Mitzvah preparation about a year in advance.

That year is about much more than learning a Torah portion. It is a chance for your son to grow into his Bar Mitzvah, understand what it means, and begin taking real ownership of his Jewish life.

During the year, he will strengthen his Hebrew reading, go through our Jewish Discovery course, and learn about Jewish beliefs, mitzvot, traditions, and what it means to live as a Jew.

He will also learn how to put on tefillin and understand why this mitzvah is such an important part of becoming Bar Mitzvah. We encourage him to join us for Shabbat along the way too, so that being in shul, following the service, and feeling part of the community becomes familiar and comfortable.

As the Bar Mitzvah gets closer, he will prepare to read from the Torah and work on a speech that is personal to him and connected to what he has learned.

We don’t believe every Bar Mitzvah should look the same. Every boy comes with his own personality, background, strengths, and comfort level. Some pick up Hebrew quickly. Some need more time. Some love speaking in front of a room, and some don’t.

We build the preparation around the child, not the other way around.

A full year gives us the time to do that without rushing and to make the Bar Mitzvah about more than just getting through the ceremony.

And if you don’t have a full year, please don’t let that stop you from reaching out. We’ll work with the time you have and create a plan that makes sense for your son.
